Marathon Update - ChiTown

I have been debating over what to do about my marathon plans for the last few weeks since we got extended and I won't be home for the Lincoln Marathon. After much internet research, I have settled upon what I think is a solid plan. I am now in training for the2007 Chicago Marathon, where me and 45,000 of my friends will get together for 26.2 miles of fun on October 7. From everything I read, it is a great race for a first timer like myself, and is flat and fast as they like to say. Team Sack still needs a few members, JAg and Ol' Buddy B are both on the fence at this point but I am confident they will make the leap.

Accordingly, I'll be updating my training schedule. I'm still going to use the same program, but will not start my actual training until sometime in June. I am of course going to keep running, but will looking to run more miles throughout the week and not necessarily get really crazy with the long runs until I start the actual program. I would like to get up to 40 miles a week with a long run of 10-12 miles. So I'm working towards that. I am going to continue to post my weekly schedule as it is a great way for me to stay motivated. Also it is an easy post I can do via email.

Week 5 of 18, planned/actual:

Monday - off
Tuesday - 3 / 3.25 @ 8:12
Wednesday - 6 / 6.25 @ 8.25
Thursday - 3 / 3 @ 8:22
Friday - off
Saturday - 6 / 6.25 @ 8:26
Sunday - 12 / Super Bowl!
Total - 30 / 18.75

I was really planning on going for a 12 miler on Sunday, but at the time I knew that I wasn't going to be doing Lincoln, we grilled steaks for the Super Bowl, and I had to get up at 0200 to watch the game. I ended up not running so I could catch some sleep.

Week 6 of 18, planned/actual:

Monday - off
Tuesday - 3 / 4 @ 8:15
Wednesday - 5 / off
Thursday - 3 / 5.25 @ 8.38
Friday - off / 3.1 @ 8:11
Saturday - 6 / 5.15 @ 8:45
Sunday - 9 / 10 @ 9:05
Total - 26 / 27.5

I don't remember what happened on Wednesday, but I ended up moving everything back a day. Saturday I looked at the wrong line on my schedule and thought I was only supposed to do 5, so I added an extra mile to Sunday. Good news is I'm down about 5 pounds in the first 6 weeks of training, it would be nice if I keep up that pace for the next few months.

I am going to change my numbering scheme, and this week is Week 1 of 16 of pre-marathon training, which is kind of depressing because we'll still be here when I finish up my pre training. Oh well, what can you do?

Week 1 of 16:

Monday - off
Tuesday - 4
Wednesday - 6
Thursday - 4
Friday - off
Saturday - 6
Sunday - 10
Total - 30

Sack,

I'll be one of the 45,000 joining you in Chicago in October. I've run Chicago five times, and each year is a new thrill. I'm sensing that this is your first Chicago Marathon. Besides the 45,000 runners, you'll have over a million spectators cheering you on. The first 15 miles will fly by, with all the sights and sounds and music and cheering.

Knowing that someone a "half a world away" in harm's way has committed to Chicago inspires me and raises my motivation.

Good luck on your training. See you in October.

Ron

Sack, this is great! My sister's step-daughter ran her very first marathon last October - in Chicago! They'd never been to a marathon, let alone been spectators to one. Ron is right, she said there were literally MILLIONS of people!

After the race started my sister and her husband headed off to a certain mile marker to watch her go by. They must have this whole marathon thing down to an (almost) exact science. Based upon your pace and time, they can pinpoint exactly where you'll be at a certain time! Apparently the group she was running with was going a little too slow for the pace she wanted to be going, so she went on ahead. As it turns out they never did see her at the milemarker so they headed back to the finish line so they could see her when she crossed.

Unfortunately, since she broke the pace w/ the pack she was in, which they didn't know, she'd already passed that milemarker and had crossed the finish line before they got there.

I guess it was a madhouse trying to find her after the race. My sister & husband had her clothes and her cell phone so she couldn't call them after the race to let them know where she was. They spent almost 2 hours trying to find her. They finally found her in some tent freezing cause she didn't have her clothes and they were trying to keep her warm!!!

She ran a faster race than she'd expected so she was really pleased. It was an experience of a lifetime for her. This is so exciting and you're going to do great too!!! :)

Piece of advice....get your hotel booked NOW!!!!

Good luck!

Ron,
This is not only my first Chicago, but also my first marathon ever. I'm looking forward to the challenge. One thing I've found out so far, training for a marthon is no joke. This will not be easy. Man invented cars for a reason.

Jeff,
Remember the 3 rules for basic and you will be find. Do as you are told, do as you are told, damnit do as you are told. Too easy. Good luck little brother.

LAW,
I am afraid of Marines so I should probably staw away. They would eat a FOBBIT Nat'l Guardsman like myself for lunch.

Ma Beans,
Done and done! I got a great rate too. I used the returning war veteran card which usually works pretty well. I didn't even have to use the we got extended card, I'll save that one for a later date. We are downtown less then a mile from the start/finish. I don't think I'll have that same problem, most likely I'll fall apart somewhere around the twenty mile mark and the wife will have to carry me back to the hotel.

Sack,

I appologize for being in limbo on the decision. I'm going to simply have to see what in the world happens with the new job. As of right now, I'm in the heart of the training and on time for the Lincoln run, but I don't see how it will be possible. I completely expect to be at the Academy at that time. I'm starting to think a better option is to perhaps fall back a bit and think about a little different regimate like what you sent and try to join Team Sack in Chicago. That's how this whole thing started anyway, right? Team up on the 1st one?

Jeff,
Take care of yourself bud! Can't tell you enough how much respect and admiration there is for your dediction. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Stay smart, stay safe, stay strong. Good luck and take care.
